•  Gandhiji’s death anniversary is observed in the State as Sampriti Dibas. Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid homage to Gandhiji today in Birbhum, during her visit to the district. Earlier this month, she had come to Birbhum for inauguration of Baul and Lok Utsav prior to Jaideb Kenduli Mela. Today, she was in Rampurhat, for attending a huge government public distribution programme and taking stock of development activities which the government has initiated at the holy shrine of Tarapith. A bouquet of new government schemes were launched from today’s programme held at Rampurhat and government benefits handed over to more than 10,000 beneficiaries on the occasion.

•   The much-loved, much-awaited International Kolkata Book Fair was inaugurated today at the Central Park, Bidhannagar by Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This 43rd edition of the fair will continue till 11 February, 2019 with its amazing spread of books from all over the world. Nearly 29 countries are participating in the fair with Guatemala as the theme country. The largest attended book fair in the world, the Kolkata Book Fair has always been the heartthrob of one and all ever since its inception. Hon’ble Chief Minister wished everyone a very, very happy visit to the Book Fair. Books have always been and will continue to be our timeless friend. This year, seven books written by her have been published in the Book Fair, taking the total number of books written by her to 87.

•  “KhelaShree”:the felicitation programme of successful sportspersons of the State, was held today at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. Organised by the State Youth Services and Sports department, the lifetime achievement, special awards, Banglar Gourav, Khel Samman and Khelashree Samman awards were conferred on outstanding sportspersons for their glorious contribution to the world of sports, in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Hon’ble Chief Minister said that the Government is committed to providing all facilities and infrastructure for achieving excellence in sports.

•  The 70th Republic Day celebration was held on Red Road, Kolkata with due honour and dignity. Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and all the Hon’ble Ministers of the State Cabinet were present on the glorious occasion where the Hon’ble Governor unfurled the National Flag. March pasts by defence force personnel and state police force added colours to the event. A colourful parade and processions were the highlights of the programme. Students from various parts of Bengal took part in the colourful parade.

•  The state-level celebration of birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was held in a befitting manner at Darjeeling at the Chowrasta. Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present along with senior Ministers of the Cabinet, Heads of GTA, Development Boards, Municipalities, senior government officials, distinguished guests and people of Darjeeling. Hon’ble Chief Minister paid tribute to Netaji and said that he is truly a National Hero and an epitome of patriotism, unity, brotherhood, sacrifice and selfless dedication. His life, works and his contribution to the cause of the motherland has always been a source of immortal inspiration for everybody, she said. On this auspicious occasion, prize distribution ceremony of the annual Himal Terai Dooars Sports Festival for Darjeeling district was held and a host of new projects including a new government engineering and professional college at Alipurduar was flagged off. Government benefits were also handed over to large number of beneficiaries.

•  During her visit to North Bengal, Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present today in the inauguration ceremony of Uttarbanga Utsav, 2019 at Kanchenjunga Stadium, Siliguri. From today till 3 February, 2019, eight districts of North Bengal - Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda - will be celebrating this colourful festival, started by the Government in 2012, showcasing the beautiful nature, rich cultural heritage and glorious talent of the region. Today, the prestigious “Banga Ratna” awards were conferred on nine individuals from North Bengal for their outstanding contribution to sports, scholastic, literary, cultural and social activities including journalism.

•  Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today chaired a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors and college principals of different institutions across the State. The meeting was held at Nabanna Sabhagar at the State Secretariat premises. Hon’ble Education Minister Partha Chatterjee was also present at the meeting. Later at the press conference, she informed that the Government is formulating a proposal to recruit graduates as interns for two years in institutes facing dearth of teachers at both primary and secondary levels. While class 5 would be brought to primary level, graduates would be recruited as interns in primary and secondary schools, she said.

•  From a huge government programme at Barasat, Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today laid foundation stone of the new Harichand Guruchand University at Thakurnagar, North 24 Parganas. She said that this will create a very big opportunity for the youth of Matua community and others in pursuing higher education in the state. She also inaugurated the 23rd Jatra Utsav from Barasat. Ten outstanding artists from the world of this popular medium of mass entertainment were conferred the prestigious Shantigopal - Tapan Kumar Award instituted by the government in 2013. Hundreds of new projects covering health, infrastructure, connectivity, self-employment, skill development, sports and overall development were flagged off and government benefits handed over to beneficiaries from today’s programme at Barasat.

•   Like every year, Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on the evening today, visited the camp at Kolkata from where the pilgrims move to the world-famous Gangasagar Mela. She also paid tributes to the great leader, Swami Vivekananda, whose auspicious birth anniversary is on the next day. She wished best to all the pilgrims to Gangasagar. She said that the government is extending all co-operation and support to the visitors. On this auspicious occasion, the longest flyover in Bengal, Sampriti, connecting Jinjirabazar to Batanagore crossing was inaugurated today by the Hon’ble Chief Minister. This 6.9 KM long flyover will ease traffic congestion in Budge Budge, Taratala, Ramnagar and Batanagar areas and will facilitate smooth communication for all.

•  Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today laid foundation stone of a new Kanyashree University at Krishnanagar, Nadia, from a programme held at the Krishnanagar Government College Ground. On the occasion, she informed that to empower the girl child, the present Government had started the Kanyashree programme in 2013. Thereafter, Kanyashree has been acclaimed all over the world and awarded several covetous awards and recognition including the 1st Prize in United Nations Public Service Award in 2017, she said. She also informed that on the next day, another new university - the Harichand Guruchand University will begin its journey at Thakurnagar, North 24 Parganas. Today the Hon’ble Chief Minister also announced the Government’s decision of setting up of an extension campus of the new Harichand Guruchand University on a 3-acre plot adjacent to the new Kanyashree University at Krishnanagar, Nadia. The students would have more and more opportunities of higher education in the state, because of this, she said. From 2018, the Government has introduced the Jaltaranga Sports Festival, a sports and games competition among the youth of Nadia and Murshidabad districts, Barasat and Basirhat Police Districts and Barrackpore and Bidhannagar Police Commissionerates. The prize-distribution ceremony of Nadia district was held today at Krishnanagar, in presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister. She wished best to all the participants. A large number of new government projects were also launched and government benefits handed over to thousands of beneficiaries on the occasion.

•  Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present in the Convocation, 2019 of the University of Calcutta at Najrul Mancha and delivered the Convocation Address today in presence of the Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal and Chancellor of the University and Prof. Sonali Chakravarty Banerjee, Vice Chancellor. She delivered the degree of D.Litt, Honoris Causa, to Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the former Governor of West Bengal, the degree of D.Sc., Honoris Causa, to Dr. Dilip Mahalanobis and Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee, eminent doctors. One of the officers of the Government of West Bengal, Manoj Pant, Principal Secretary, Public Health Engineering Department and Land Reforms Commissioner was awarded the Ph.D degree in today’s Convocation. The Hon’ble Chief Minister extended her congratulations and best wishes to all the distinguished persons, scholars and recipients of degrees, medals and awards and to all their family members. She said that she was very proud of the student community as they are the leaders of tomorrow, the ambassadors of peace and unity. On this occasion, she also once again paid her respects to the teachers who play such a great role in creating fine human beings. Today, the Hon’ble Chief Minister also announced the Government’s decision of setting up of new Chairs in Calcutta University - Mahatma Gandhi Professor Chair to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Chair. She also announced the Government’s decision of raising the age of retirement of College and University teachers from 62 to 65 and of Vice Chancellors and Pro-Vice Chancellors from 65 to 70 years.

•  The Baul and Lok Utsav was inaugurated today at Kenduli by the Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee along with prize distribution ceremony of the 7th Jangalmahal Cup and Sports Festival and 1st Rangamati Sports Festival. Thousands of youth from Birbhum participated in the events making them a huge success. All these events have been introduced by the present Government to encourage sports and games as well as preserve and propagate the glorious traditions and culture of the state. More than 1000 baul artists presented melodious renditions in the programme that won the hearts of all. On the occasion, a large of new Government projects, including an unique 10.54 MW rooftop solar project in Sagardighi, Bakreswar, Kolaghat, Bandel and Santaldihi Power plants of WBPDCL, were launched and government benefits were distributed among thousands of beneficiaries.
