•  Like every year, the West Bengal Government observed International Mother Language Day with full honour at Bhasha Shahid Smarak, Deshapriya Park. Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present on the occasion along with her Cabinet colleagues Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and many other dignitaries. The Bhasha Shahid Smarak at Deshapriya Park was set up at the initiative of the Hon’ble Chief Minister.

•  Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the Bhasha Shahid Smarak today at the Ekushe Udyan, opposite Birla Planetarium in Kolkata. The memorial has been built to commemorate the martyrs of the Language Movement or Bhasha Andolan in Bangladesh, who gave their lives for the cause of Bengali to be made the national language, on February 21, 1952. February 21 is now celebrated as International Mother Language Day, after being recognised as such by UNESCO in 1999, and later by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008. The day promotes awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

•  Utkarsh Bangla, a flagship scheme for placement linked skill development, was launched today by Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Netaji Indoor Stadium today. The scheme will create lakhs and lakhs of employment opportunities for the people of the State. Henceforth, every year, about 6 lakh young aspirants will get opportunity for technical and vocational skill development from ITIs and Polytechnics under this new scheme. After successful completion of training, they will be linked to jobs and self-employment opportunities. Already, the Government has created nearly 68 lakh employment and another 2 lakh is in process. More than 98 Crore mandays have also been created. Utkarsh Bangla will give huge boost to job creation for our young generation, informed the Hon’ble Chief Minister.

•  Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the Adivasi Bhawan and Lepcha Bhawan at New Town, in a Government programme at Milan Mela Ground. Among the other projects inaugurated today also through were ‘Aharan’ for the State Institute of Hotel Management in Durgapur and a renovated Mahajati Sadan. A centre for supporting weavers of muslin, named Muslin Tirtha in Krishnagar and a water supply project at Shakuntala park for the benefit of the Behala region have also been set up.

•  Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present in the unveiling ceremony of three important ITC projects in Bengal – Integrated Consumer Goods Manufacturing Facilities at Panchla and Uluberia and Information Technology Park, ITC Green Centre at Rajarhat. The projects entail nearly Rs.3000 Crore out of ITC’s investment plan of Rs.4500 Crore in Bengal over the coming few years. The projects will cause significant socio-economic development and create thousands of new job opportunities for our youth, said Hon’ble Chief Minister.

•  In a press conference at the state secretariat, Nabanna, Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed that those who haven’t received their digital ration cards would get them soon. The system is in place, so there is no need to worry, she informed. Also, those with old ration cards can still get their subsidised food grains. A delay in getting ration cards won’t hamper to get their rations, the Hon’ble Chief minister informed. She stressed that strict action would be taken against anyone found discriminating regarding distribution of ration. She said that subsidised food grains are already being distributed. The Hon’ble Chief Minister also put forth her views on the rise in prices of life-saving drugs by the Central Government. She said that drugs for cancer, diabetes and other major diseases are already costly, and increasing their prices would put them out of the reach of common people.

•  Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee convened a high-level meeting at Nabanna with various Government departments and municipal bodies to combat the spread of dengue, malaria and unknown fever in the state. She instructed all concerned to make adequate arrangements to prevent the spread of the disease. She announced that an advisory is being issued to all the schools and organisations in an effort to spread awareness and also control the spread of various diseases during the monsoon season.

•  The Government of India has announced selection of Bengal for Krishi Karman Award for the year 2014-15 as the best performing State in overall production of Oilseeds. With this, it is now 4 times in a row that Bengal has won the Krishi Karman Award for outstanding agricultural productivity, informed the Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
